IKF Region 7 Round 1 of 7 – CalSpeed, Fontana, CA (Feb. 2-4, 2007)
Jacob’s IKF season got off to a good start this past weekend at the kart track at California Speedway.  IKF chose to run CalSpeed track #3, Grande which is 15 turns and 0.75 miles in length.
Jr 1 Comer – 2006 KRT chassis, Pitts Performance Motor
HPV-1 – 2006 KRT chassis, Pitts Performance Motor
Rookie Sportsman – 2007 Shockwave chassis, Pitts Performance Motor (chassis arrived on Monday before the race, first time on track was Friday’s (2/2) practice, immediately in the top 5 in lap times.  We do not intend to run this chassis in IKF this year once our new chassis’ have arrived.
Friday Feb. 2, 2007 Practice:
Practice went well in all classes.  Jacob was immediately among the top five in lap times in all three classes.
Jr 1 Comer – uneventful practice sessions.  All went as planned.
HPV-1 – Session 3 - left rear hub broke off exiting turning 15 at speed.  Caused kart to snap-spin and back into the truck tire wall very hard.  Jacob was checked out by the EMT’s and released with a bruised hip.  Kart didn’t fare as well – bumper was badly bent, brake rotor bent, rear wheel bent, sprocket and sprocket carrier bent, axle bent.  All rear components were replaced and Jacob was back on the track with this kart for session 6.
Rookie Sportsman – appeared we had the chassis dialed in.  Practice times were consistently in the top 5.  Spun and broke the rear bumper mounts exiting the grid during the last session.  (Cold, sunset.)

FINAL RACE – 7th 5.633 seconds behind 1st. Highest – 3rd, lowest 7th
“This new chassis was different then our KRT chassis.  We simply missed the setup and the kart became too tight to race competitively about five laps into the race.  We’ll be better next time.  It’s obvious from our Pole run that we have the Pitts power with our motor to win with.  We simply have to get the chassis setup right.”
Sunday, Feb 4, 2007:
HPV-1 – 40 entries:
FINAL PRACTICE – 2nd fastest 0.139 seconds off 1st
QUALIFIED – P2 0.026 seconds off pole.
HEAT RACE – 2nd 0.043 seconds behind 1st.  Highest 1st laps 1>5, lowest 2nd.
FINAL RACE – EXCITING FINISH – 2nd  0.006 seconds behind 1st.  Highest 1st (Lap15) Lowest 2nd.

“The kart was set up perfectly, the Pitts power was awesome.  I waited in 2nd place in a five kart draft until two laps to go.  I was able to make the pass into the lead going into turn one.  The third place kart (Connor Ford) went with me and drafted cleanly past me going into turn one on the last lap.  I made my final move coming out of the turn 15 hairpin onto the front straight.  I missed the win by less than a foot as we raced to the start-finish line.  It was a great race that I should have won.  I waited too long to take the lead.  I won’t make that mistake again.  Congratulations to Connor Ford on his first IKF win!”

Team JWR – Our KRT chassis have proven to be fast under virtually all race conditions.  We see no value in changing chassis in the midst of our last year in the cadet classes.  JWR will continue to run KRT chassis for the balance of the 2007 season in IKF.
